Committed to UN SDGs, we integrate environmental and social responsibility into every project, creating lasting value for communities

Botswana’s Diamonds: A Global Benchmark for Excellence

Botswana stands as the world’s leading diamond producer by value, renowned for its high-quality diamonds that often surpass the global average in size and brilliance. Iconic discoveries like the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona and a 1,098-carat diamond unearthed in 2021 highlight the nation’s geological richness.

With diamonds contributing 30% to Botswana’s GDP and 80% to its exports, the industry is a cornerstone of economic prosperity.

Botswana’s rough diamonds vary widely in size and colour, categorized as:

  • Smalls: Below 0.65 carats
  • Grainers: 0.66 to 1.79 carats
  • Large Stones: 1.8 to 10.79 carats
  • Special Stones: Above 10.8 carats, including some of the world’s largest

Key Features:

  • GIA Colour scales: Botswana diamonds typically range from D to J (colourless to near-colourless)
  • Botswana Diamond colours: Diamonds are typically rare fancy-coloured stones in pink, blue, and red adding exceptional value

On the GIA colour scale, Botswana diamonds typically range from D to J (colourless to near-colourless), with rare fancy-coloured stones in pink, blue, and red adding exceptional value. While local beneficiation policies prioritise cutting and polishing within Botswana to retain economic value, diversification strategies are emerging to ensure long-term resilience. The WASA Group aligns with these goals, offering a transformative partnership with Botswana’s Key Diamond Industry Stakeholders and Ministerial Policymakers.

In collaboration with the Botswana Diamond Manufacturers Association (BDMA), which plays a pivotal role in policy discussions and industry development, WASA strengthens its commitment to Botswana’s diamond sector. Our approach balances local value retention with global competitiveness, supporting diversification into sectors like agriculture, copper mining, and tourism through initiatives like the Diamonds for Development Fund.

Elevating Diamond Standards with Advanced Technology

The WASA Group employs industry-leading methodologies to ensure diamonds meet the highest standards of quality and value. Our grading process adheres to the Gemmological Institute of America’s (GIA) 4Cs framework - Carat, Cut, Clarity, and Colour - recognized globally as the benchmark for diamond evaluation. By leveraging Sarine Technologies’ AI-powered systems, The WASA Group delivers unparalleled precision and consistency, reinforcing trust in Botswana’s diamond industry.

  • Carat Weight: Larger diamonds are rarer, with value increasing exponentially as size grows.
  • Cut: A well-executed cut maximizes brilliance and sparkle, enhancing a diamond’s visual appeal.
  • Clarity: Fewer internal inclusions and external blemishes result in higher value and quality.
  • Colour: Graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow/brown), colourless diamonds are most prized.

The WASA Group utilises Sarine’s advanced tools, including the eGrading™ system for automated 4Cs analysis, the DiaMension® system for precise cut measurements, and the Sarine Colour™ device for accurate colour grading. These technologies minimise human error, ensure GIA-standard compliance, and streamline operations for cost efficiency. Supported by GIA certificates, widely regarded as the industry standard, our grading process enhances diamond value and buyer confidence. In collaboration with Botswana’s Key Industry Stakeholders and Ministerial Policymakers, The WASA Group aligns with local standards, holding a Botswana Diamond Manufacturers Association license to affirm our commitment to excellence.

Key Features:

  • GIA-Standard 4Cs Grading: Ensures globally recognized quality assessments for Carat, Cut, Clarity, and Colour.
  • Sarine Technologies Integration: AI-powered eGrading™, DiaMension®, and Sarine Colour™ systems deliver precision and consistency.
  • GIA Certifications: Unbiased reports verify diamond characteristics, boosting market trust.
  • Efficiency and Profitability: Automated grading reduces costs and accelerates transactions for stakeholders.
